We live in Germany’s famous wine region so there are hectares of vineyards just around the corner from our home. Small and large vineyards. Beautiful and gorgeous views as far as the eye can see. Each year, as the weather gets warmer, you can literally taste the anticipation in the air…wine festivals in each little town across this region. The local weingut, eateries showcasing local wines and regional beers against local favorite meals, are open again after having been shuttered for the winter. However, there is such a wide variety of food and drink, it can be a bit daunting to look at the drink menus.  Even our favorite weinstube, Parlament, which is closed on Saturdays during the summer wine season, has a hearty drink menu.  Local wines are always showcased there, year-round.  It’s neat to try the ones that are grown in the nearby fields!  I haven’t had a bad glass yet.  Last week, RS Silvaner was a repeat offender during supper, both at Parlament as well as Weingut Leber down the street.  Both places are likely to be regular date night places, I think, so I’ll have a chance to sip my way down their lists.  I’ll also have to work out more in order to keep the carbs off!

The other day, we stopped at an Italian restaurant Aposto, where I had one of their yummy seasonal specials (with asparagus/spargel) washed down with a nice light hefeweizen beer mix from Schöfferhofer, Birne-Ingwer (Pear-Ginger).  I’m not usually a light fizzy beer drinker (I admit, I love me a Guinness).  This was a perfect combination!

Ok, another favorite drink, besides a shot of grappa, a nice red, was recommended by one of my favorite Frenchmen, Christian, who owns a local wine shop on Breite Strasse in Mainz Gonsenheim, GlouGlou.  Introducing…Provence’s L’Etoile du Repaire.  I asked for a nice red that could be sipped as well as accompany red meat.  Christian was spot on with this recommendation.  I liked it so much, I went back for another bottle so that Hubby could also try it out since our guests finished it off before he got a sip.  And it was less than 10 Euro, so it’s not only tasty, it’s relatively inexpensive.  You can read more about the vineyard, Le Repaire du Géant, here.  It’s the only English language website I could find on the region and is created by a Dane who loves the Rhone.

I’m sure I’ll write more about drinks and food this summer… I hope you’ll join me (and if you’re a wine connoisseur, please forgive my amateur write-ups!).
